Internetology - Web Design

What is the benefit of having a site on the Internet compared with distributing the traditional brochure?

You’ve paid the printer a lot of money for your new brochure. You’ve sent it to prospective clients (and paid dearly for the database) after addressing all the brochures (more money for the labels and printing). You’ve paid the Post Office the cheque for postage. After all that, you may get a 2% response.

If you were to take the identical information from the brochure and put it on the internet, for a fraction of the cost, you can get global exposure at no extra expense. All you then have to do is follow up the email responses you receive directly from your site.

How can you tell what will set your business or home site apart from the millions of others on the Internet?

Good question. By the time you've surfed the net and checked out what others are doing, you pretty much have an idea of what catches your eye. You know what sites are coming up in the "top 20" of the search engines. If you don't, then you should spend some time doing just that so you know where you want to head with your own site. Keep your eye on the "competition".

Why should you hire someone else to design your site when there are free programs with an easy user interface and plenty of free graphics online to use?

You work 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday at your day job. Eat dinner, and finally get to sit in front of the computer at 7pm (ignoring the kids if possible)
You’ve downloaded that freeware HTML editor.
You’ve downloaded the graphic creator.
You’ve downloaded the program to upload your site to the server.
Two months later you're no further than you were when you downloaded the program(s) to create your own site.

Let's do some simple maths.

Let’s say at your day job, you earn £10/hour.
You could now work 3 hours per week night (plus 5 hours per weekend day) for 8 weeks trying to create a quality site.
Technically you’ve just ‘spent’ £2,000 for a "do-it-yourself" web site.
Imagine what you’d be ‘spending’ if you earnt more than £10 / hour!
Still want to do-it-yourself? We thought not!!
